Traditionally Power Station Fly Ash Lagoons are emptied using excavation or dredging to recycle the waste fly ash.  This process is slow, and potentially very damaging to the environment, with spillage from the bulk haulage lorries and the transfer of the materials via the pickup on vehicle tyres, a real danger, and because of the amount of water in the material flocculents are needed.

At Jex Plant, we can use our unique technology to pump fly ash from lagoons into either a filter press or silt bags in order to dewater it. And, as our pumping system can pump upto 70% solids, the dewatering time required is significantly reduced, filter presses become up to 60% more efficient and the fly ash can be recycled extremely quickly.

Our system does not require a large amount of plant, therefore reducing the amount of onsite traffic.

Using this brand new system, flocculent is not required. Our system is very flexible – we can remove fly ash via pontoons for larger lagoons or from the edge for smaller lagoons.

Our system is suitable for use in plastic lined, membrane lined or clay lined fly ash lagoons.

We can also pump dry fly ash!

There are three  main problems with this;

1) It is time consuming

2) Not all the slurry can be removed from the lagoon without damaging it’s liner

3) Additional water is required

Using our pumping system, we can drain your slurry lagoon right down to the liner without damaging it, without the need for stirring and because we can move 80% solid material using compressed air, very little (if any) additional water is required, and in these times of drought, that’s a massive bonus!

Watch as we desilt a moat. This particular moat has a huge amount of silt and very little water, but using or moat desilting techniques, we brought the moat back to life.

As a leading river and canal dredging contractor, we can use one of a number of different dredging techniques, to dredge rivers and canals. As you can see in the above video we can dredge rivers and canals, removing the silt via a barge to an offsite area, and using or unique pumping system, empty the barge contents to nearby farmland or other areas offsite.

Sibelco slurry lagoon clearence

As a large Industrial Minerals company we create solids as a by product of sand washing. The solids generated from our process settles into lagoons which from time to time, require cleaning out.

Moat Desilting

We have recently used this team to clear, pump out and de-silt a moat/watercourse round our property. The location and immediate environment presented difficulties of access for heavy machinery (eg JCB) and silt pumping seemed to afford the least damaging option .

Historically speaking, movement of silt from the lagoons would normally be carried out by way of load and haul practices. Moblie plant requiremnets for such an operation are Excavator and three articulated dumpers. Using load and haul techniques for silt movement has in the past raised cost, environmental and safety issues and as such a new approach was sought. [Read more]

After coming back for a full survey, Peter gave usa detailed quote broken down into seperate ares in case we wanted to do part only.

We agreed to go ahead with the full job and were given an estimated start date and an estimated duration for the job. The job started on time and was completed just a few days over the stimated period.

Unfortunately we suffered from an exceptionally dry autumn and there was insufficient water to enable the silt to be pumped. As a result dumper trucks had to be brought in to transport the silt away. The job was still completed in a professional and timely manner. The only downside was the silt which we expected to be spread evenly (and thinly) had to be left in large piles which we plan to level out next year.

Overall we are very satisfied with the standard of work and the manner in which the site was cleared at the end of the job.
